                                        Industry Research

L/O: To research the process, companies and regulators behind the film industry.

1) Production is the raw footage and other elements for the film and recoded during the film shoot.

Distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.

Exhibition refers to public screening of a film.

2) Media conglomerate or a company that owns numerous companies involved in mass media enterprises.

3) The British Board of Film Classification regulates films in the UK.

4) The Lego Movie was rated a U in the UK.

5) The Games Rating Authority regulates video games in the UK.

6) In the UK The Lego Movie video game was rated 7 years old.

7) The two companies that produced The Lego Movie were Lin Pictures and Warner Bros.

8) Phil Lord and Chris Miler directed the film.

9) TT games produced The Lego Movie video game.

10) Warner Bros. Pictures distributed The Lego Movie.

11) The Advertising Standards Authority regulates advertising content in the Uk.

The BBFC gave The Lego Movie a U rating because violence there are lots of fight sequences in which the good characters take on various baddies, including Lego robots and Lego skeletons. The Lego figures kick and punch at each other, while leaping around in fantastical style. Very few of the blows are clearly seen to land and all the action involves toy figures rather than humans. Occasionally the heads of the Lego figures pop off during fights, and one character's head is knocked off by a flying coin but continues to talk to his friends. Other sequences have science fiction space ships and robots shooting laser beams at others, causing explosions and crashes. No one is seen to get hurt and the fact that all the fighting involves animated toy figures means that the fantasy nature of the violence is very clear. Language there is some very mild bad language, with uses of 'butt', 'bum', 'darn' and 'heck'.

The video game received a PEGI 7 because it features non-realistic violence in a child-friendly setting or context and violence that lacks any apparent harm or injury to fantasy or mythical being creatiures.

Friday 24th September 2021

1) It is important for film regulators to exist so young or vulnerable people don't watch things not suitable for them.

2) People may be against film regulations because it limits what they can watch and takes away the idea of freedom.

4) Film-makers may worry about the classification they are given because they want to appeal to the target audience. If an action film was rated a 12 a 15 year old is less likely to go and see it because it makes the film seem worst.

5) Warner Bros would have wanted the film to receive a U certificate because there target audience is younger children. Parents won't take their children to watch a film they are not old enough to see.

6)It was important for the game to receive a 7 year age rating because the majority of people with consoles would be 7+, also the slightly older viewers wouldn't have wanted to play a game with a younger rating because they might think its too childish.

Vertical Integration

Vertical integration is the process whereby a single company controls both the production and distribution stages of a product. This means all profits go back to the parent company rather than being shared out.

Vertical integration may benefit a company because it helps increase profits. Warner Bros for example made a huge profit from The Lego Movie as all money came back to them.

                                      The Lego Movie: Narrative Theory

                                  The Lego Movie: Tv Advertising

L/O: To evaluate the methods used to market The Lego Movie; to link the methods to the target audience

In Dancing on Ice at 7.27pm on Sunday 9th February 2014- five days before the movie launched- ITV broadcast a world first, an ad break made entirely out of LEGO.

British heart foundation

confused.com

BT

premier inn

Stop motion

almost 6 million people saw it live on tv

additional 1.1 million people saw it on youtube within a week

written about in over 60 different consumer and trade productions

at the end of 2014 No.1 in the UK movie box office charts

The Lego Movie broke boundaries with the TV ad and linked social media campaign by doing things differently. They worked with 4 other companies such as British heart foundation, BT, Premier Inn and Confused.com and made the worlds first tv ad break made completely out of lego using stop motion. This was extremely successful, nearly 6 million people saw it live on tv. However releasing it at the same time on youtube rocketed views and made the advert viral. An additional 1.1 million people watched the youtube video.

                                                                      Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when one text is shown in another. Much like ' follow the white rabbit' is a reference to Alice in Wonderland

emmet = Neil

                                              The Lego Movie: Trailer

L/O To evaluate the methods used to market the lego movie; to link the methods to the target audience

Starter

They would have wanted their logos in a Lego style to fit the topic of the film.

They showed them before the trailer to promote the movie.

Equilibrium =The 'normality'. Characters in their day to day life=president making an announcement

Disruption=An event occurs to break the normality= president business changes to lord business

Recognition of Disruption= Characters realise something has gone wrong= tell emmet  he is the special

Attempt to solve disruption= characters try to solve the problem= when emmet and his friends try to beat lord business

New equilibrium= problem is solved. Things return to normal, or a new normal is established = not in the trailer as it would ruin the movie.

The equilibrium and disruption need to be shown quickly because the target audience is young kids. They usually have short attention span.

Diagetic- sound that the characters hear in the film world

Non-diagetic- sound that only the audience can hear

Intertitle- the text used between shots in a trailer

colour palette- the variety of colour used

Explain how The Lego Movie trailer uses two elements of media language to target different audiences.

                                           Video Game Analysis

L/o: To analyse using media terminology.

To identify elements of media languages and representation in a text.

Specific colour palettes are used to convey ideas about the characters. Wyldestyle uses the colours pink, blue and black. The colour black has a connotation of mystery and the unknown. The colour pink is known to be more feminine . Blue is known to be more masculine. This suggests that Wyldestyle can be used as a role model to the target audience and breaks the usual stereotypes of females. It makes her someone different to the other characters.

                                     Poster Campaign

L.O: to explain the effectiveness of the campaign; to analyse the representations on the poster campaign.

Dr Strange

a man dressed in blue and red, hands infront of body

The colours blue and red are often associated with heroic characters. His facial expression suggests he is serious and stern. His hand gestures look like he is casting a spell this may mean he is a magician.

Context

-he is british
-an actor
-plays Dr Strange
- marvel character

Film Poster

denotation

building on fire at points
man infront of building dressed in dark colours
clouds

The building on fire may suggest that this is an action film and that is the aftermath of the disruption. The man is dressed all in black infront of the building, his posture suggests he is in charge.

-dark colours (black,red)
-1 character

1) the colour palette is mostly made up of bright colours which suggests it is a comedy, however the explosion in the background suggests it has an aspect of action.
2) The poster contains intertextuality using characters. For example Batman and the Greenlatern are both from different films.

Wyldestyle stereotypes- makeup&hair done = woman are bothered about what they look like
                                      - calm, unbothered facial expression= strong fearless women

In The Lego Movie poster campaign gender stereotypes are re reinforced through the character Wyldestyle. In the closeup shot of her you can see she has her makeup and hair done, this suggests that woman only care about their appearance and have got loads of spare time to spend on these luxury activities. However in the long shot of Wyldstyle we can see she is wearing an all black outfit. This is usually seen as not girly.

In contrast, her facial expressions show she does not fit usual stereotypes around women. In the close-up shot she looks aggressive and she is fearless. On the other hand, Emmet looks scared and his running away in his close up shot. This goes against usual gender stereotypes as it shows not all men are strong and brave, just like not all women are fearful and timid.

                                   Representation

L.O: to analyse the representations throughout The Lego Movie promotional campaign.

How does this portray the male gender?
-male are superior, male gender = heroic
- nobody= men are/can be insignificant
- Emmet breaks stereotypes by being nervous and fearful- usually males are strong and brave
- Emmets not good at the jobs = men are useless

The main character in both products is a male who later becomes the hero of the day. This supports the stereotype of men.

Male as the dominant figure
- Emmet is the hero
- villain is a male who is powerful

Male as weak- subverts
Emmet  'i want to go home'

Wyldestyle

support
- make up
-hair
- facial expression- close up
subvert
- not wearing a dress
- tracksuit
- black clothing

Vitruvius
wise, wizard, noble
teaches Emmet

subverts stereotypes of ethnic minorities in media
